Answers to the questions we are asked most often: how lessons work, what formats are available, how to pay and how to claim back part of your child’s tuition costs through your annual tax return.

How do I find out my level if I don’t know where to start?
There’s nothing to worry about here. Before almost every course, we check your level with a diagnostic test and place you at the right stage — from A1 to C1. Want to know your level in advance? Message us on WhatsApp and we’ll arrange a test. There’s no obligation.
How do the online lessons work?
A live lesson on Zoom plus an online classroom. During the live lesson, you work with the teacher and practise speaking. Everything else is in the online classroom: materials, tasks, homework, revision, lesson history, and a vocabulary trainer. You can access the classroom from a computer, tablet, or phone. There’s nothing to print or buy.
How is a school different from a private tutor?
A structured approach. We have a clear shared methodology, a programme built around your goal, and progress checks at every stage. If a teacher isn’t the right fit, we’ll replace them without slowing you down: your lesson history and programme stay in place. A good tutor can deliver results, but first you have to find one and see if they’re right for you. A school takes that risk away.
Can I learn Latvian from scratch if I only speak English?
Yes. We have programmes for both English-speaking and Russian-speaking students. The materials are modern and built around real vocabulary people actually use — not textbooks from another era.
How much does the course cost?
It depends on the format. Group — from €100/month (≈€12.5 per lesson), one-on-one — €35/lesson, pair — €22.5 per person per lesson. Part of the cost for a child’s tuition can be refunded via your VID tax return — up to €153 a year.
Are you a licensed school?
Yes. Latvian Easy holds licences for educational activities for both children and adults. That is why a child’s tuition can be included as justified expenses (attaisnotie izdevumi) and partly refunded via your VID tax return.
What language are the lessons taught in?
We teach Latvian and English. For Latvian, we offer separate programmes for Russian-speaking and English-speaking learners — we’ll match you with the right one.
Latvian online or in person — which to choose?
Online works for most students; in-person lessons are mainly for younger children. Online lessons (Zoom + online classroom) work from anywhere in the world. In-person lessons take place in central Riga, at Citadeles iela 6.
I’m 45+. Isn’t it too late to start?
No, it’s a great age to start.

More than a third of our students begin learning after the age of 35 and go on to successfully pass international exams.

From a cognitive point of view, adults have a real advantage: well-developed logical thinking. They often grasp the structure and grammar of a language faster, while children may need more time to make sense of it. There are no age limits when it comes to learning a new language: our school has students in their 50s, 60s, and beyond who are doing brilliantly.

I’m a complete beginner. Will you take me on?
Yes.

Having no prior knowledge, or only a school programme you’ve long forgotten, is a perfectly normal starting point. We teach Latvian from the very first phrases and guide you towards confident results without rushing.

You can start from scratch in whichever format suits you best:

  • One-on-one — your teacher builds a programme around your pace and goals.
  • In a group — you study alongside students at exactly the same starting level.
Which format should I choose: group, one-on-one or pair?
Group lessons work well if you have free evenings and budget matters. The one-on-one format is a good fit if you have a deadline or an unusual schedule. Pair lessons are ideal if you have a study partner: close to one-on-one in effectiveness, but 35% cheaper per student. Not sure? My level is somewhere between A2 and B1. Where will you place me?
During the diagnostic assessment, we’ll identify your level precisely and place you in the right group. The boundaries between levels are not always clear: speaking, grammar, and listening skills are often at different stages. The aim of the programme is to strengthen weaker areas, not force you into a formal label.
How long does it take to prepare for the A2 exam?
On average, 3–5 months with regular lessons, especially if you are in a language environment. The exact timeframe depends on your starting level and how regularly you study on your own.
What level of Latvian do I need for citizenship (naturalisation)?
A confident B level — roughly between B1 and B2. We prepare you for the language exam based on your goal: during the diagnostic assessment, we’ll identify your level and recommend the right programme.
What level do I need for permanent residence?
Permanent residence requires an A2 level. You can prepare in any format: in a group (0 → A2, 5 months), one-on-one, in a pair, or through the interactive self-study course. During the diagnostic assessment, we’ll confirm your starting point.
Do you prepare for the state language exam (VISC)?
Yes. We prepare students for the state language exam (VISC): grammar, vocabulary, and the speaking part — all aligned with the exam format. You can prepare in any format: group lessons, one-on-one, or in a pair.
How long does it take to reach B1 or B2?
As a rough guide for group courses: A2 → B1 — about 5 months, B1 → B2 — about 5 months, B2 → C1 — about 7 months, with two lessons per week. The exact timeline depends on consistency, independent practice, and whether you are in a language environment.
What if I don’t pass the exam on the first try?
We’ll help you prepare for the retake — at any level. We’ll identify your weak spots and get you ready for the exam format.
Can I save money by learning with a partner?
Yes. Pair lessons cost €22.50 per person, compared with €35 for a one-on-one lesson: a 35% saving for each learner, with the same level of effectiveness. You just need a partner with a similar level and goal.
What age can children start from?
From age 4, and it’s a great age to start.

At 4–6, children learn through play, songs, and cartoons. They get used to speaking and listening before they have time to decide that language is a “scary school subject”.

Lessons for the youngest children are held in person only, while school-age children can also do perfectly well online.

My child doesn’t know the language well. Will they cope?
Yes. First, we’ll check their actual level, then choose the format and group that match it. “Doesn’t know it well” is actually the most common starting point, not a problem: children often learn some language at school, but feel shy about speaking or get confused. That’s normal, and it can be improved quite quickly.
Why study Latvian separately if it’s already taught at school?
The main difference is in the goals and the approach.

At school, language is often studied as an academic subject: through rules, tests, and textbooks.

Our aim is to give children language as a practical tool for life. We shift the focus from dry theory to active speaking practice and real communication. Our programmes are built around topics children find interesting right now, and learning happens at a comfortable pace, without fear of making mistakes. This helps children not just “know the rules”, but use the language.

Where do in-person lessons take place in Riga?
In central Riga, at Citadeles iela 6. There’s public transport nearby and convenient parking, and before the first lesson we’ll send you exact directions. There is also an online format for children, available from anywhere in the world.
Which format should I choose: group, one-on-one or pair?
Group lessons suit sociable children and are easier on the budget. The one-on-one format is better if your child is shy or needs a more personal approach. Pair lessons work really well when there is a friend, brother, or sister alongside. Not sure? Message us and we’ll advise based on your child’s age and personality.
How do you choose the right group for my child?
We then place them in a group by age and level, with 7–10 students per group. Your child studies with peers at a similar level and still gets plenty of attention from the teacher.
Do you help students prepare for school language exams?
Yes, we do. We offer dedicated exam preparation programmes for group, one-on-one, and pair lessons, covering exams in lower and upper secondary school.
How can I claim back part of my child’s tuition costs through a tax return?
Your child’s tuition at Latvian Easy can be included as justified expenses (attaisnotie izdevumi) in your VID tax return. We issue a certificate and the payment documents. From 2025 the refund is calculated at 25.5% within an annual limit of €600 — up to €153 back, and any amount above the limit carries over to the following three years.
How can I pay for the lessons?
By bank transfer using an invoice, or by card on the website. Your card details are never shared with the school. We provide all supporting documents for your tax return or accounting.
Can I cancel my studies and get a refund?
Yes, a refund is possible.

Under the law of the Republic of Latvia, when a contract is concluded remotely you have the right to withdraw from the service within the first 14 days. To do so, simply send a request via WhatsApp or to info@latvianeasy.lv.

A few important points:

  • For one-on-one and group lessons: the terms for refunds or rescheduling lessons after the 14-day period are governed by your learning agreement.
Can I cancel or reschedule a one-on-one lesson?
Yes, free of charge — as long as you let us know at least 12 hours before the lesson starts. If you cancel less than 12 hours before the lesson, it is counted as held and must be paid for, as the teacher has already reserved that time for you.
What should I do if I can’t attend a group lesson?
Don’t worry. The teacher will record the lesson and send you the lesson recording, and the tasks will be waiting in the online classroom. Watch it whenever it suits you and continue with your group without falling behind.
Can training be arranged through a company?
Yes, there are corporate terms. A contract, invoices with VAT, and progress reports on employees for HR and accounting. We tailor the format to your team — from a few people to a whole department. You can find more details on the “For companies” page.
What documents do I need for the tax refund?
An invoice for the tuition and the training contract are enough. With these, the cost of a child’s tuition goes into your VID tax return. The refund is 25.5% of the amount within a €600/year limit (up to €153).
